When I look back on my journey I can see where it has been thrown off track by unexpected challenges and trials. But despite those bumps my destination has remained the same, due in large part to the power of aspiration. I’ve always felt a powerful bond between my grandest dreams and my daily performance. When I let those dreams guide my actions, they have pulled me into a world beyond my expectation. I was lucky to feel that pull for the first time when I was just 12 years old. My dad took me to an air show, and I got my first glimpse of something beyond my dreams, something bigger than myself. I watched in wonder as the jets roared past us, circling and rolling in and out of tight formation, their wing tips almost touching; I was absolutely mesmerized. The aura of the team and their incredible ability was transformative. I decided that day that I wanted to fly with the Blue Angels.

It’s interesting to me today—with my Blue Angel tours behind me—that I believed so strongly in the possibility of that dream. Even as I took steps forward in my naval career, I had no idea what it would take to get there, but I never had any doubts that I would one day fly with the Blues. My journey was unexpected but my destination was written in my aspiration. It guided my actions, and bound the story of my success.
Tapping Into The Stream
There’s an inexplicable emotion that is tied to our core desires, and using that feeling to elevate our performance is a matter of grabbing hold of the source. Accepting the possibility of those goals, and thereby unlocking the mystery and wonder is the first step toward elevating performance in a very real way. When that connection between dreams and actions sinks in, it’s like being tied to the tail of a comet. There’s a powerful transcendence there, and if you find a way to harness that emotion, it will pull you forward on a path to continuous improvement.
Take a moment amidst the hustle and bustle of life and reflect on what is pulling you forward. It feels good to access those parts of the mind, and it strengthens our resolve. What is at the core of your being, and what is it tied to? What is pulling you forward today, tomorrow and into the future?
Glad To Be Here!
