Thought leaders shape the way we think about business, but action leaders change the way business is done. Putting plans and debates into motion is the work of great leaders. But inspiring action—being a catalyst for execution in those around you—is a life long journey. When I flew with the Blue Angels, I learned what it meant to live in a culture of action. Since that time, I’ve worked with some of the world’s most innovative companies, and I’ve found that teams are most effective in an environment where action comes easily. We’ve all been there, fired up after an inspiring meeting, but the question is, how do we sustain that environment? How do we make immediate action the standard response to ideas?
#1 – Glad to Be Here® Mindset
A grateful mind has transformative power. Begin each day with thoughts of the people and opportunities that make your performance possible. It has the power to inspire execution by lending our actions greater meaning. The inward effects can create happiness, which fuels performance, and outwardly, it creates good will among peers that builds trust and increases performance.
#2 – Get Aligned on A Centerpoint
Unified action is powerful action. The Blue Angels used a centerpoint, a single space on the ground, in order to organize precise, unforgiving maneuvers. In business, directing action towards a singular point drives all action toward the desired results. When everyone knows where they’re going, action becomes second nature.
#3 – Friday Debrief
The Blue Angel Debrief is the backbone of continuous improvement. It takes success and failures alike, and transforms them into positive action. In all the work I’ve done with companies, I’ve found the debrief to be a powerful and easily actionable tool. At the end of a long week, gather up all the loose ends. What got done, and what needs to be done soon? When you leave the office on Friday with everything tied in a package, Monday runs on rails.
Glad To Be Here!
